The GOES 8 satellite has five spectral bands as shown in the table
below. Additionally, the associated latitude and longitude files for
the bands are described below. The lat/lon files are available for download
when you place an order for GOES data.

The GOES images are in swath format and the satellite is geostationary.
Due to satellite repositioning, there are three sets of lat/lon files:
one prior to June 17, 1998; one for June 17, 1998 through March 5, 1999;
and one set for after March 5, 1999. Therefore, you only need one set
of lat-lon files, depending on the date of the data you download. Please
be sure to download the appropriate lat/lon files for your data.
Please be aware that the file sizes of some
of these data are very large,
you may wish to order them via CD or
8 mm UNIX tape.
Please Note: Some files will be named aaa991431145.vis instead
of A991431145.VIS; for example. The aaa files have an additional array
of quality indicators for each row in the swath after the reflectance
values.
SPATIAL COVERAGE
The images cover the area from about 5 N - 16 S and 40 W - 75 W at full
spatial resolution (1,4,8,4,4 km). Because of the differences in resolution,
there are three sets of latitude and longitude data corresponding to:
the visible band; any of band 2, 4 or 5; and one other for band 3.
TEMPORAL COVERAGE
Our temporal coverage begins in March 1998, and extends forward up to
the point that we have imported data. There are two intensive archiving
periods each year. One is from March 1 to April 30 (wet season); while
the other is from August 1 to September 30 (dry season). During these
intensive archiving periods, images are acquired every half hour or
every hour. Outside these intensive periods, images are acquired every
three hours; at 2:45, 5:45:, 8:45, 11:45, 14:45, 17:45, 20:45, and 23:45
UTC.
QUALITY CODE
Visible band data have a quality label of g if less than 5% bad lines
appear, m if between 5% and 20% bad lines appear and b is more than
20% bad lines appear. View our Quality Tables

FURTHER INFORMATION
There is a datasite maintained by Florida State University with a little
more information on the data and some images of current (about 3 days
inventory) GOES 8 viewable images of the Amazon. You can access it at
